Are you ready for another Learning Resources giveaway? Last month they kindly gave the Easi-Speak Recorder to one lucky commenter who, along with many others, shared how she would use this kid-friendly gadget in her classroom. This time, we're looking for ways you would use their HearALL™ Assessment Recorder. While the Easi-Speak is designed for individual recordings, the HearALL is designed to record small groups of kids:
I found it to be a great tool to use during reading workshop. While I was working with guided reading groups, and the other students were working on the mini-lesson activity, I would put the HearALL with a group I was not meeting with that day. I put the device on a small table and called these students do a book talk, a literature group activity, or to write a sequel to their story while sitting around the table. Since this group was student-led, having the HearALL record them was a perfect way for me to quickly check that they were working together, problem solving when necessary, and completing the task at hand.
How would you use this in your classroom? We'd love to hear your great ideas! Let us know by leaving a comment with your email address and we'll randomly choose a winner on Wednesday.
You can check out more goodies from Learning Resources on their Facebook and Twitter pages or see their You Tube videos by clicking on the specific links.

I would use the HearAll with some of my higher level reading groups. It would be great to hold them accountable for their discussions :) Thanks for offering this giveaway!

Definitely for running records/other assessments with my kinders. Also I think it would be an amazing confidence boost for my reluctant readers to be able to listen to themselves read to show them how great they did! Exciting giveaway! Thanks!

I use readers theater scripts in my classroom a LOT and these would be perfect for those. I could leave it with a group that was practicing independently while I worked with other groups and it would allow me to go back and listen to them to see what I needed to work with them on the next day! Love it!

I would love to use this with my special ed students....using this device would help in fluency...I would have the students in the beginning of the week record their initial reading of a passage....at the end of the week I would have the students record the same passage and then compare the recordings. The students would then grade themselves as to how well they did and the group would give encouragement and sometimes suggestions on improvement.
I would also like to record a book or passage for my student to read along with me so that he/she could hear the modeling and I could be working with another student at the same time.

I also do a lot of readers' theater, so this would be perfect for the students to listen to their performance before the real one.

I love your ideas on how to use the recorder. I think I would use the recorder in various ways like during assessments as a way to check me, in small groups during book talks for my high group, and as a way to boost confidence in recording my reading below level so they can hear themselves.
rieneal@ymail.com
I've been wanting one all year. I would use if for my fluency station. Great Giveaway.

I would use the recorder to ease the comfort level of one of my future students. A lovely little girl has selective mutism, and is very shy. She is slowly coming out of her shell. It would be fantastic to record her whispering to a trusted friend so I could discreetly asses her reading skills.
I would love to use the recorder as a way for students to keep track of their own fluency, as well as to compare samples from the beginning and end of the year for growth. :)

Hello Mrs Sykes
Incredible! I rotate my students in centers for math and reading workshop. I would find this most valuable during math time. I always have one group working together at the "problem-solving table." This would be a great way to monitor what's being discussed, how it's being addressed, and who's doing most of the talking. I love this idea! I could definitely use one of these babies!
I would use this with my reading workshop it would also be great to use for fluency tests such as DIBELs
I would use the Hear-All during assessments and I would use it to record students as they are reading independently or with peers... to help keep them on task!

I think using the HearALL would be great for recording students while they were reading. It would be a great way to motivate them and show them how they are doing with their reading fluency.

I am going to be a first year teacher, so this would be perfect for my new classroom! I would use it for SO many things, including Reader's Workshop, Guided Reading, Writer's Workshop, etc. :)

I've been wanting the HearAll since I first saw it! I have a decent size group of students (looping with them) that could benefit from a fluency station! We could use this with the SLP to pair in our classroom! The possibilities are endless :)

I would use it to have kids record and listen to fluency growth to have proof for the new RISE Indiana teacher evaluations. It would be great to practice tone of voice and have kids read passages with different tones of voice. It would also be fun to have them record and publish little scripts. In math it would be neat to have them record and explain math problems so you could see how students understand problem solving process.
amsgoodwin@gmail.com
I would use it in my fluency workstation!

I would use it for fluency as well. Let them hear how they sound when they're reading. I have too many fast readers. So this might help them to slow down

I would use it during reading; a student could record and listen to his/her reading in order to self-check fluency/how he/she thinks the passage was read.

I would use the fluency reader as part of my guided reading block as well as book talks with the students. I think it would be an easy way to share some it with parents as well!

Awesome - I would use this device for my Accelerated LA lit groups. dgoshert@psd202.org
I would love to record my students so they can hear themselves reading! So many times THEY can point out what they did wrong and it's so much more powerful!
I would also like to use it to check for students' text anxiety. Our fluency test has become this big stressful thing for a few kiddos, and I'd love to discreetly record them for a minute, and then check accuracy later so I can see if their text anxiety is really getting in the way of their best reading!

Oh there are so many ways to use this fabulous tool, but the one that is sticking out is a parent tool. I could use it for parents, to hear their children reading. I could show the parents the areas that I am working on in the classroom and maybe give them ideas or suggestions. Having them be able to hear their kids reading is also very beneficial, some parents miss out on so much that being able to hear part of their child's day means so much to them. Thanks
Teaching a lot of ELLs, I would use the recorder to have my non-fluent readers record themselves reading! I think this would be a fantastic tool in the classroom.
Lauren.humes@gmail.com
I would use it to record group writing projects, where students could read a story written together, then take the recording and add it to a slideshow of pictures they drew to illustrate their story. I would also use it to listen to their literacy/math/writing instruction to listen to small groups working together and making sure they were doing what they were supposed to do, and being able to hear what they were saying independently would help me understand their comprehension of the material.
Also, I would love for student groups to record a reading of a story together (students don't usually liked to be recorded and replayed independently, but group reading usually makes them feel confident). Then I could replay the story to the class as they followed along and read, and I am sure it would just be more interesting then hearing me read!
hollydellinger@aol.com
I think that I would use the Hear-all as you did. Also I would use it's ability to pick up multiple voices to record our Reader's Theatre performances. I would also like to use it during Guided Reading so that my students can listen back to their reading and critique their fluency.
Donna
darryl40w@att.net
I would use this for my remedial students so that way they can hear themselves and the errors they make. I think it would also be amazing for my dyslexic student as she could record herself reading and then read along with herself. Hearing where she makes errors will allow her to see the problem in a new light AND she can tell by hearing why it is wrong. It will give her a whole new way to see things. For my executive function student, it would allow him to record lessons and play them back in chucks so that he can process them.

I teach in a district where they like us to meet with all our students each day for guided reading. This would be helpful in allowing me to accomplish this task. It would also be beneficial for teaching my kiddos fluency. I use readers theatre's to help but this would be amazing. There are so many uses it boggles my mind.
I am teaching a 3/4 split classrom next year which is a new concept to the school I'm at. I'm trying to learn how to teach this concept without having anyone to turn to. I think this would be a great resource to use in my class! I could have the 3s or 4s go off in a group and record their discussions so I could hear it later. I could record important parts of a lesson and when I'm meeting with a group, another group could listen to the lesson again if they are struggling. There are so many options!
kwinget@comcast.net
I think this recorder would be a great way to monitor any small group work, no matter the subject. It would also be a great way for students to practice giving presentations--they could hear themselves and work with me or classmates on slowing down, pausing, not saying, "um..." quite so much, etc.
I would love to use the hearAll much as you did. I would use it to record students during reading workshop when they are in their literature circles so that I could go back and listen to their fluency and discussions. I would also use it to record readers theatre performances.

I would use this during my guided reading time where I conference with the students.
Katie.neustadter@gmail.com
I would *love* to use this in my classroom as a way to catch up with my students! I have so many (last year, we were up to 30 first graders in a room!) that it is VERY difficult to conference with them one-on-one AND have time to listen to reading, so this would be a great way to "double-dip!" I'd have kids use it either at a fluency workstation or, even better, in Buddy Reading (2-fer!), then listen after school and confer the next day. What a God-send this would be! :)

I have students work collaboratively to retell stories. I use a rubric that helps students evaluate whether they have included all elements of the genre and all important events or information. We are required to give 2 grades per week in reading. It would be wonderful to include independent conversations recorded on the Hear-All along with the rubrics in my grading system!!!
I would definitely use this during my ARI or small reading group time. I have a small group of struggling students that I work with. It would be great to record them as they read, and then play it back to them and discuss how they hear themselves and work on ways to improve their reading. I could also use it in a center to do the same thing.
I would use this for small groups, oral reading assessments, running records, science discussions, or having kids read aloud themselves and listen to themselves.

I would use the recorder for my struggling students so they could be able to hear their strengths and weaknesses. I would also use it for parent conferences.

I would love to use this during math!! One of my goals this past year was to get students having deep discussions about the work they do in math. We worked on them being able to justify and critique their work and the work of others. It went really well! I was amazed at the conversations I heard going on throughout the room. The only problem was being able to make it around to each table. This would be a great tool to hold a group you might not have time to get to accountable for their discussion.

I would like to use this in reading during small group,or one on one sessions, to record students for fluency. I would love to be able to record them and then play back what they sound like for them.
I also would like to use it during writing time to record a peer conferencing session. I would then like to use that recording as a model for the class of things that were done correctly or things that would need to be improved for next time.

I would use it for guided reading, fluency, small group instructions etc., DRA, parent interviews etc. Love to win. thanks mary at apopovic@primus.ca
HI!
This is a great tool! I would use it to record students responses to one-on-one testing. I would also use it to help me determine whether they may have speech concerns and to help me understand students who have speech concerns. I would also use it to record those students who mumble or speak in a low voice. The uses are endless. I would love to win this great too1.

I will be teaching 2nd grade this coming year. I am going to have each student interview a parent (or relative) about reading. This would be a wonderful tool for the students to use so they can go back and listen to the answers given. They can then write their findings after the questions have all been asked and answered.

i would love to win one of these for the students i tutor- what a great way to work on fluency and articulation

Wow! I have never heard of this technology before! I teach my student how to do writing conferences, and I can really see a value using a hearALL. After I model how to do a peer conference (either using a video that I've made, or having a co-teacher come in and perform a role play) I have students begin to conference. It is hard to get around the class and give students the feedback that they need. Having a hearALL would be an invaluable resource that will truly benefit students! Working in an inner city district, using any technology has really proven to help student engagement. This is great!
jpalazini@nbfacademy.org
I would use this in reading groups and for running records. I would love for the children to hear what I hear when they read!
lraines78@gmail.com
What a great tech item! I could use this in all the ways already mentioned. I would especially be interested in using it during small group time so that I could monitor the understanding of a group that I am not with. I also think it would encourage students to stay on task!
mandy.taulman@gmail.com
I am getting ready for my first year of teaching... 4th grade! Woohoo! I can think of several ways I could use this... but the most exciting one is during Readers Workshop. It would be great to hear what is going on in groups I cannot meet with daily. I also used an idea similar to this with my own daughter this last year. She would read aloud and record herself on her ipod, then go back and listen to herself and read along. It was so exciting to see her reading levels jump so quickly and her self-monitoring take off!
