Holiday Compliment Box

If you're looking for a way to spread some good old fashion, truly meaningful, holiday cheer this year then look no further!!  The Holiday Compliment Box is the perfect thing to add to your classroom project list or even an activity for your own family holiday activities.

First, give your students a class list and enough recording cards for each of their classmates:
Since this as an at-home project, send the note explaining the project home with your students.  The note includes directions for decorating a box that opens with wrapping paper, stickers, Fun Foam, etc.  Here's an example of one that was brought in:
After the box is decorated, each student will write why each of their classmates is a gift to our class.  You should see the things they write!  I emphasize that the compliments have to be specific and meaningful.  They can't simply write, "You rock!" on each slip!  No way!  I have them think of things the other kids in class have done for them.  Have they helped them on the playground?  Chosen them as a partner during group time?  Assisted them when they were stuck on a math problem?  Think of instances like these and let the person know that you valued their help.  Next, they place all of their sweet little notes inside of their box and bring it to school on the date they are due.  *Please note-even though I send this as an at-home project it could easily be done in school with some wrapping paper, boxes, and a folder to hide the wandering eyes from their compliment writing :).

Now...let the fun begin!
Have the students place their boxes on their desk and pass out their notes, Valentine's Day style.
When all are passed out, give them some time to read through the letters written to them by their peers and get ready to see some smiling faces!!  I often find myself tearing up!  They are so sincere and sweet!!  The children definitely treasure this box forever!!
