Random Acts of Kindness Day 2

I have been wanting to find something for my own children to do that gives them the chance to  reach out to others in need.  We made a long list of things we could do.  Our ideas included donating our time to a soup kitchen, visiting the local nursing home, leaving little treats for our neighbors, and helping a family in need.  Still stuck, we decided to head to the internet in hopes of finding something that shouted out to us.  We stumbled upon the Greater Chicago Food Depository website and read that it has been open for almost 25 years and delivered 64 million pounds of food last year alone!  After a little more searching, we found out that they were holding a donation event about 45 minutes from our house.  I thought that provided a great opportunity for my kids to earn money and present it to those who actually worked for the charity.  I told my kids that I would match any amount they donated, so off to work they went!!  They started with (of all things!) using the carpet cleaner to scrub a muddy footprint that's been on our carpet forever!!  Bless their hearts!  It was sweeping and dusting for the next 3 days until they earned enough that, when combined with money from their piggy banks, would be a great amount to donate.

We met some people from the Greater Chicago Food Depository - they were sooooo nice!  We presented our donation to them and my sweet little kiddos were beaming!
What a wonderful way to show them that we have the means and abilities to help those who are less fortunate than us and just how great that feeling is!!

On top of all of that, there was a little added bonus thrown into the mix!  My daughter's favorite Blackhawk's player, Jonathan Toews, made a surprise visit at the event!!  What a great day!
Stay tuned for more random acts of kindness to do by yourself and with your family and students!!
