All About the MOM’S!!!

We compiled all of our best Mother’s Day activities from the previous years and added them to this post! We hope you can find something to use with your students this year!

**Before you go start any of these activities, if you know one of your students does not have a mother in their life, you can encourage them to think of any special lady who takes care of them- grandma, aunt, sister!***

First up, Mother’s Day Portraits! We began this project by first playing this song for our students:

You pressed play right??? You are not allowed to scroll down until you pressed play! Such a precious song!!! (Take us back to our high school days, too!)

We listened to the song, visualized the words, drew what we visualized, and shared our visualizations with our neighbors.

Of course, the students were visualizing their MOMMA!!! A great way to start this project- which here is a sneak peak:

I know, so cute!

To make these Mother’s Day Portraits, the students had the opportunity to shop at the Ma's Spa Shop, which was open today from 1:30-3:00. Ma Spa is a unique kind of store. It is only open in the days prior to Mother's Day :)

And just like its name, Ma Spa is a special store that sells all things related to "mom."
I gave each student a $5.00 budget.
They started by browsing the items in the store and created their shopping list.

These students are calculating the cost of the items on their list.

Once their shopping list was approved by the store manager (ME!) they were able to purchase their items. We started with MUST HAVES first!

These were some of the must have items that the students HAD to buy for their mommy portrait. Different colored construction paper for hair and light purple and blue construction paper for the background.

The other must haves for mommy: clothing and eyes! Clothing consisted of scrapbook paper in "girly colors" and cost $0.75. The eyes were $0.50 per pair.
After purchasing the "must haves" the real fun began! Students then purchased the accessories for their mommies!

We had lots of steals: $0.50 per pair!

Buttons and ribbon were also some best sellers for accessories. I was very impressed with the creativity of how the students used the ribbon on their portraits!

Can't forget mom's make-up! I didn't allow my students to use any pencils, markers, or crayons for their portraits! Instead they used different colored pieces of chalk for the facial features and make-up!
Shopping was exhausting...but now it was time to make mom!

Out came the glue and the scissors!

I CAN NOT believe how adorable these turned out!!! When I did this with my students, I did not have an "example" to show them- so I was a bit nervous. However, that ended up being a great thing because look how GOOD they look!!!!

It is UNCANNY how this portraits looks EXACTLY like the moms!!!

Mother's Day Portraits

Now, for another Mother's Day Activity...The Ma Spa!!!!
It all started with an A-DOR-A-BLE felt chandelier I found at Hobby Lobby. I knew I had to incorporate it into an activity somehow!!

Then...Mother's Day popped into my mind! I must say, I went a little bonkers! I swung by The Dollar Tree and picked up a bunch of "spa" items! Here are a few:

I also found tablecloths, fancy plastic cups, rolling massagers, scented soaps and lotions, vases, and flowers!
Then, OH MY GOODNESS, I found this plastic beverage dispenser at Walmart for $12!!

Not only can I add some water and lemons for a fancy drink at our Ma Spa, but I can use it at all of our class parties!!

I set up 5 stations that the students will take their moms through. If you have a student whose mom can't come, enlist an aid or the secretary, or simply have them bring in a grandmother or other special lady in their life!

Here my daughter and I are modeling the different stations that would be open during the Ma Spa!

And yes, you definitely encourage the moms who are attending to wear their robes, slippers, and comfy clothes for their afternoon of pampering!

Vase, flowers, stones…5 bucks at The Dollar Tree + Acrylic frames…$2.49 a piece at Walmart = PRICELESS additions to our Ma Spa!

What a special touch to make the moms feel appreciated!
This 17-page file contains all of the things you will need to hold a Ma Spa for Mother's Day or an end of the year "thank you". Here's a sample of some of the pages:

Get Ma Spa! at our TpT store!

And lastly, ready to bring a HUGE smile to the special ladies in the lives of your little sweeties?

Here's just the thing!

First, collect empty water bottles from the students about a week before starting the project (store the bottles without the caps on for a few days so they have time to dry out).
This should be NOOOO problem since we all have been recycling for Earth Day...right???

Next, have them write a message to their mom (or other family member).
Then, they can cut it out and roll it into a tube small enough to fit inside the neck of the bottle. Be sure the message is facing the outside! The writing paper is sized to open when put inside the bottle.

Finally, send home the bottles and secretly have your students float it in the tub, put it in the
shower, or even hide it in the dishwasher!! Anywhere they put it, this keepsake is sure to bring that warm and fuzzy feeling to its special recipient!

My own kiddos surprised their grandma by hiding a bottle in the fridge in the same spot as all of her "regular" water bottles!

One thing to keep in mind...
-You may want to have your students write their messages in pencil first and then trace it with marker because once the paper is put into the bottle...it's in there for good!!

Have you done any of these activities with your students???? We would love to hear from you!

Happy (Early!) Mother’s Day to all the moms reading this out there!

End of the Year Learning Celebrations!

Are you looking to end this year with a bang? Are you ready to go a little bit above and beyond and be “that teacher” down the hallway that is still doing cool things in the last month of school? If so, we have two ideas for how you can end the school year with celebrating your students' success with their families. Introduce our Author Publication Celebration and End of the Year Learning Celebration!
imagelearing

These two celebrations are BY FAR the most memorable activities that I do all year with my students. The parents just love to see their child having fun while learning at school and the students LOVE getting all dressed up for their parents to visit! The administration is always very impressed and of course, I LOVE it!

Before you read on, here is my teacher guarantee: The time and preparation that you put into these celebrations is WORTH IT! Smile Read below to see how I plan inviting the families of my students’ inside our classroom to celebrate our learning with us!

For both of the learning celebrations that I hold at the end of the year, I try to think of ways to keep my students engaged in the process of planning! I make sure they are part of the planning and preparation right from the start- and I begin by having students fill out job applications.
job
Comfort Committee?? Communications Committee?? Welcoming Committee???
Too many choices! Students write about why they are interested in the position and write about their prior experience! Smile

After the students are hired for their committee, we are ready to start planning for the actual celebration- they are now so excited and ready to get to work!

Our agenda for our End of the Year Learning Celebration is as follows:
schedule
During the next week, my students work hard to prepare for the celebration by writing a persuasive letter to me- their teacher!- as to how they can persuade me to let them go to the next grade. They take this writing through the writing process- prewriting, drafting, revising, editing- and they finally get to publish their paper in front of a live audience- their families, at the Learning Celebration!
As a side note, Nicole and I dress up as “judges” in a black gown and gavel, as our students plead their case as to why they deserve to go to the next grade. (Of course, all students ARE passing and going to the next grade- our district does not retain students!)

Students also work in cooperative groups to write the ABC’s of third grade. Each group is given a letter of the alphabet and they write a description about an event that begins with that letter. For example, G is for Guided Reading and R is for Reading Workshop. The students are then completely in charge of creating a bulletin board to display for the celebration, which highlight the ABC’s of third grade.

I also did the learning celebrations with first and second graders, too. For my first graders, I wrote the ABC’s of learning, and my second graders were able to complete this as a shared writing lesson.
Students then nominate each one of their classmates for our end of the year awards. They don’t find out the results until the presentation at the celebration! And, I don't present the awards...the awards committee does!

Our agenda for the Author Publication Celebration, is as follows:
image
Students choose one story (their best from all year!) to present at the Author Publication Celebration.
 IMG_2234firstandfinaldraftexample
Students take that story through the writing process and I also conference with them, guiding them on how they can make their writing even better. Students also find a creative way to publish (make their story ready for an audience) their story. The young authors choose a snippet of a story (if it is really long!) or read their entire story in front of a live audience- their families!

This story was nominated for the Fantastic Fiction Award- there are several different categories for other stories to be nominated.

When all of the hard work is complete, it is celebration time! And let me tell you…we go ALL OUT!
The decorations committee is in charge of setting the stage and laying out the red carpet for our our fans to make their grand entrance on.     celebration 005     Then, they helped put the finishing touches on the bulletin board!   celebration 036     For the end of the year Learning Celebration, the students turned into celebrities and wrote autobiographies about their life as a celebrity during the past year. Smile

The adoring fans (their parents!) really enjoyed reading these!

At both our End of the Learning Celebration and at The Author Publication Celebration, the concessions committee members are some of the busiest committee members!!!

celebration 007  Look what a great job they did setting up the concession stand! They also came up with some very clever signs!

At both of our celebrations, we also have a communications committee, which is in charge of passing out comment cards to all the audience members.
celebration 010     The equipment committee posted the VIP reserved seating signs on all of the chairs!
celebration 008     Boy, oh, boy did our fans feel like VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE!
Look what an awesome job they did with the seating on the set:

Would you believe me if I told you that the Clean Up Committee is one of the most popular committees at our celebrations!?!? I kid you not!

Big garbage bins, disinfectant wipes, sweepers, signs…all of these things add up to some pretty excited committee members!
One of the best parts of our Learning Celebrations are the photo booths that we have in the classroom!
Again, the students helped make a pretty sweet looking photo booth!

A little bit of sparkly spray paint=much more glamorous!
 celebration 001

How did the students use this pretty frame????
Let the directors of the presentation demonstrate first!
 celebration 042
That’s right! We poked our pretty and handsome faces right through that frame!
(Total Pintrest idea, by the way!)

Still want to make a photo booth for your celebrations, but don’t have an old frame or don’t want to spend money buying one to spray paint?  In that case, just decorate a background!
celebration 006
Gold garland was on sale after Christmas…so cheap! The background was from Party City...or from Oriental Trading...I am not sure! You could also take a cute tablecloth and use that as a background!

The decorations committee helped our director tape the background to our large bookshelf on the set. We had an instant photo booth for the paparazzi to click away once they arrived!

After the presentations were over, all of the students took at picture with me at the photo booth.
celebration4
And no, I don’t wear hot pink boas on an everyday basis. But when I am a teacher turned director at our End of the Year Celebration (HOLLYWOOD STYLE!), then you bet!

Oh, and another extra special touch from the decorations committee??
All the female celebrities got some extra *BLING* to decorate their fingers for the premiere of the End of the Year Learning Celebration!
